IAC/I’s Home Shopping Network says it will unveil what has been a Holy Grail of sorts for cable operators and programmers — point-and-click purchasing using a remote control. Variations on the theme have been tried before, some dating back more than a decade. It’s widespread in the UK but has yet to catch on in a big way in the U.S, hampered, in part, by the success of online shopping. This time around, starting with NYC and Hawaii, viewers who provide a credit card to HSN during a registration process will be able to purchase something without picking up a phone or going online.
Speaking of online, as USA Today notes, HSN.com reported double-digit growth last quarter but total sales are down slightly. A successful t-commerce play could be a boost.
Disclosure: My father’s company is an HSN vendor.
