The number of US mobile users who bought a ringtone in the second quarter of this year increased to 24.6 million, according to Telephia. Monophonic and polyphonic ringtones accounted for only 12% of the market…six months earlier that figure was 30%. Realtones are the main market driver (I think realtones here is classified as a song, so include “covertones” and so on), and increased by 22.4% over six months to capture more than three-quarters of the market. Ringback tone sales increased by almost a half to capture 11.5% of the market.
Unsurprisingly, the biggest selling ringback tone was in the Rap/Hip Hop genre, Ridin’ by Chamillionaire.
