The thing about Rave that is not clear until you dig deeper is that a lot of these cool features that they show in their marketing colateral are dependent on carrier network features. The thing is, these features are generally unavailable. This is especially the case with location based services. Trying to get carriers to support LBS in the way users expect is very very tough and to the best of my knowledge neither Rave, nor anybody else, has been able to deliver. In one case I was intimately involved in, the carrier's response to the University (in a major city no less) was maybe in 2007 or 2008 we'll be ready.

Rave looks interesting, but you should also take a look at clearTXT (www.cleartxt.com). They have some of the same services plus offer a tie in with e-learning systems (i.e., Blackboard) so students can instantly get course information via SMS and email (for example, as soon as grades are in a student can get her grade sent to her phone), emergency alerts, and other information. And they don't make students buy a new phone - which, as some articles have pointed out, students haven't taken too kindly to.
