EBay will pilot a customized version of the Opera Mini browser in Germany which will allow eBay users to sell, bid and buy things using mobile phones. It extends eBay’s functionality onto mobiles, but seems to be a bigger deal for Opera, which will be paid based on the volume of web transactions made using its browser.
According to El Reg this is part of Opera’s attempt to move up the value chain by cutting deals with telcos and content providers to persuade them to get handset manufacturers to pre-load the Opera Mini software onto handsets (it’s preloaded on my new phone — Yay!).
Opera Mini eBay is set to debut this month…Opera Mini currently has has 3 million users and eBay Germany has 20 million registered users.
