This week marks the beginning of UK retail sales by Sling Media. The Slingbox runs 180 pounds, $338 compared to $199 here; no mobile option yet. As in the U.S., Slingbox is expected to be disruptive. I’d also guess the actual user base will be relatively small, as is the case here, where Sling Media may rival early TiVo-in terms of the attention-to-actual-devices-in-use ratio. (The Slingbox isn’t the only location-shifting option; others include Orb Networks and Sony’s LocationFree.)
Sling Media is in early talks with European mobile carriers, cable and satellite companies. “Conversations are clearly beginning,” a spokesman told Reuters.
