Can someone explain to me why hackers or whoever it is that causes a DDOS would want to go after Six Apart? To me, LiveJournal is very uncensored. I don't see why it would be viewed as "corrupt" or as "evil" as Microsoft. If anything should be attacked, it is MySpace. That place is awful. Ha! ;)

yes sravesh… i agree. but also one has to look at it from another perspective. i think the start-ups should be thinking of these issues from day one. what if they are successful sort of a thing.

Steve, Jason Levine has information about the attack that makes it look like there's a real, identifiable culprit—and it's not Six Apart.

Hey Om,

I've got a news article on the DDoS attack over on Publish.com, with quotes from Anil.
http://www.publish.com/article2/0,1895,1956973,00.asp

I agree with Daniel, above. There are a lot of DDoS attacks going on, and it looks to me like "censorship" attacks where hackers are avenging themselves against political and security bloggers who write posts the hackers don't like.

I'm gonna do some more digging and hopefully have an article up on publish.com about that tomorrow.

Om,

You might want to do some digging on this one. We have racks/servers in 7 different colo facilities across America. In the past month, all 7 colo facilities have encountered the largest DDoS attacks they have experienced to date. 4 of the 7 facilities had not experienced a major attack in the past 12 months. 2 of the facilities experienced repeat performances of their attacks multiple times in the month. I've spoken to other IT friends and they're reporting similar personal stories. Something is amiss in the garden!

Mr. Malik -

I'd be interested in knowing the blow by blow action a company takes (at the management level) to involve the proper authorities, etc. when something of this order occurs.

Any chance that fits within the charter of your blog?

Gerald
