TopnoteOops. It’s a "self-righting" device, not a "self-righteous" one. Above-Net presented their TopNote prototype at the recent Embedded Systems Conference, and expects device availability after September of this year. The TopNote is a Windows CE 5.0 device, not to be confused with a Windows Mobile handheld, and has some interesting specs. In fact, if you took some features of a small Tablet PC and mashed them with some Windows Mobile specs, you’d have something similar to the TopNote. The touchscreen unit is available in either 6.4" VGA or 5.7" QVGA resolution and is powered by an 600 MHz Intel XScale PXA270 CPU. Additional features include: optional cellular radio (CDMA / GSM / GPRS), WiFi, Bluetooth, SDIO slot and USB ports.

One of the most interesting aspects of the TopNote is the ability to auto-orient the screen depending on how the device is held. Thanks to an accelerometer in my Toshiba Portege M205, I have a similar function and it’s one I use daily. Need to flip from portrait to landscape? Simply turn the device 90-degrees and the screen will magically change orientation; quite a handy feature. The TopNote appears to be a device in search of a purpose and an OEM; could you see any uses for this in your mobile day? Full specs on the TopNote appear after the jump.

  1. Wow, this device looks like what I’ve been hunting for, for YEARS !!! The perfect combination of tiny screened pocket pcs and power-hungry tablet pcs. If they can just get the price in a sweet spot now you could see massive adoption in the student/education/artist community. I can’t waith :-) (note to higher power … please don’t turn out to be vapourware or released for industrial applications only).

  2. I can’t tell you how many times my Tablet has fallen over when balanced on its edge. This is a god-send.
