Bernama.com: Tamil mobile content is creating waves in Malaysia, where a huge Tamil immigrant population lives. Celcom (Malaysia) Bhd‘s 3G users can look forward to downloading Tamil movies and video clips. “It’s going to be very interesting. I can only tell you that you will be able to get things that you can’t get previously,” Celcom’s vice president for marketing, Zalman Aefendy, said.
Celcom, which is currently the largest Tamil content service provider in the country in both romanised and Tamil characters, plans to continuously enhance its Tamil content especially in the 3G segment. “The reason why we launched the largest Tamil content is not purely from the data revenue perspective but on a bigger picture, the Tamil community and Tamil market have been pretty much neglected by the telcos in the country.” Hence, this was a great platform to capture the market segment, as Indians made up about 10 percent of the country’s population, Zalman said.
Celcom has about seven million customers, of which 45,000 are 3G users. There is no demographic data on its Indian subscriber base since over 80 percent of them are prepaid users. But such an innovation by Celcom is relevant since its parent company, Telekom Malaysia Bhd’s plans to go beyond Malaysia. Telekom Malaysia is currently negotiating a stake in India’s Spice Telecom. Previously, Celcom has also announced that it is in the midst of preparing to launch contents in other languages, such as Punjabi and Kadazan.
