CBS joins News Corp. today with the launch of new a b2c mobile effort (and dueling news breaks in the Times). CBS is pitching news alert subscriptions: CBS News to Go, priced at $0.99 a month, and E.T. to Go, news from Entertainment Tonight for $3.99 a month. Unlike News Corp., though, video plays an important role in the CBS efforts — the alerts will detect whether a handset is video or photo capable and default to text if not. If the handset is capable, 10-second clips will be delivered.

Other items in the offing, according to the Times:

– a similar service for CBS Sports

– live mobile TV

– a mobile soap opera in 3-5 minute increments.

– a $6 monthly service that will include sound effects for mixing with conversations, images, games, ring tones, etc.
