At the Public Broadcasting New Media Conference, a panel/discussion about the lessons learned from NPR and local stations’ experiences with the podcasting project, about six months down the line. Among the participants, Jo Anne Wallace, GM, KQED-FM; Maria Thomas, VP and GM, NPR Digital Media; with John Hagel providing business analysis.
Some numbers from Maria: 42 participating entities in the NPR podcasting project, of which 35 of those are stations. Producing about 80 podcasts…flowing through this centralized repository (on NPR.org), and members’ own stations. Succcess from underwriting: four major sponsor: Acura, Vanguard, Intel and HBO. End of five month: 13 million downloads, now up to 16 million downloads. Whether it is a success: who knows? We’re judging by what we see, and we think it is a succesful pilot.
John’s presentation was very interesting in how the various stations approached this and how they worked together.
