The head of China Mobile, Wang Jianzhou, stunned audiences here today but pointing out the growth of mobile music in China. He said a successful number one pop song might sell a million copies in China, but in the last 6 months one song was downloaded 15 million times over China Mobile’s network. He said the total revenues gleaned from mobile music last year was more than the total revenue generated by the entire Chinese music industry. This revelation elicited an loud intake of breath from the audience. Vodafone CEO Arun Sarin also predicted a content boom in China saying that when 3GSM comes to China there will be a reduction in the price of handsets, so that customers are “indifferent to buying a 3G device”.
