From the day I spotted the SF Tech Connect SSID on my new Nokia 770, I had been flummoxed about the SF Tech Connect. Things became quite clear when Niall emailed me a link to an announcement by MetroFi which turned on 3 “hot zones” in San Francisco.
(Check them out on this Google Map) These are in Portsmouth Square, The Ferry Building and the Civic Center, and are ad-supported hot zones. San Francisco Library, Union Square and SBC Park are other locations where city is offering free wireless access. Niall and I went war driving, and found the networks, (screen grabs here) along with one access point.
Despite our best efforts, we could not log into the network. Despite all the hoopla, the signal was pretty weak in most places and we could not login a single time. Macworld has more details.

Well now I don’t feel so bad. I spent a good hour sitting in Union Sq. Park trying to sign on to any one of half a dozen Wireless Networks visible there, but none of which (Google Included) actually provided external connectivity.
In the end I stolled over to the Kimpton Hotel Group Hotel Down the street and was able to log on there (I’m a regular guest so I had the SSID but it might be open now).
Would like to know when these hotspots will actually be live instead of attractive nuisances.
