One of the most creative monetization strategies I have seen is Mindarks Project Entropia. It's a MMORPG game, with a real economy. The game money, PED, has a fixed exchange rate to the US dollar. There is no start up cost and no monthly fee. You can play for free, but if you want to get a good start you better put in some money to buy some basic weapons etc. Mindark gets their money from decay on weapons etc, which have to be repaired (which costs money). So the company actually makes more money when people play more, which is opposite of the regular western MMORPG-model where people who play a lot just cause costs.

How about the Second Life model, where like real world, pretty much everything costs (real) benjamins?

"For $4.99, you get buy this +16 Gaunlets of Steel! And if you click within the next 15 minutes, we'll even throw in the +2 Boots of Speed for free!"

... you get the idea.

I am no gaming expert nor a big player but i think there is another less known indirect monetization model.

Allow free game play and make money by taking a cut on in-game commerce thro taxes & commissions.
