Cleveland goes WiFi

Om Malik | Thursday, August 18, 2005 | 11:26 AM PT | 1 comment

Cleveland just announced its city-wide Wi-Fi network, dubbed “Digital Communities.” Cleveland has teamed up with Intel, Cisco, Accela and others in an effort to narrow the city’s digital divide and boost social and economic development. In the early phase, Cleveland’s mobile inspection teams (such as building, zoning, fire and water) will be the first group to realize the immediate benefits that city-wide wi-fi can provide. Twelve departments, and more than 100 mobile inspectors will be using this network. Consumers, of course can enjoy the WiFi goodness as well. Continue »

Skype’s Number Game

Om Malik | Wednesday, August 17, 2005 | 11:00 PM PT | 13 comments

Skype came out some data today, trying to give a sense of what’s up with one of the most hyped brands in the world. The company says so far it has passed 150 million downloads and 50 million “registered Skype Names.” These numbers really don’t amount to anything much if you ask me. It doesn’t tell you how many people have registered two or more names. The numbers don’t tell you how many are paying customers. In other words, pure FUD. I am sorry they have to do a better job of disclosing their user information. Continue »

What’s Up with AdSense?

Om Malik | Wednesday, August 17, 2005 | 2:01 PM PT | 7 comments

Adrants says Feedster #1 blog, Engadget might be in breach of Google AdSense terms of service because it is putting more than three ad units per page. Its actually the case on other popular Weblogs Inc. Network blogs, like Luxist. Not knowing anything specific, I have a feeling that something’s up. Jason has said that he makes a million dollars from AdSense, and I am not sure he is dumb enough to jeopardize all that. Don’t you think? (I just confirmed this with Google, which says it is an experiment with Engadget.) Continue »

Digital Music Services, Dot Bombs of Today?

Om Malik | Wednesday, August 17, 2005 | 4:30 AM PT | 8 comments

New York Bodegas to announce a Latino music digital download service…. Indian corner shops now offering one song and two Samosas for a $1….. given the current state of madness around digital music, I would not be surprised to see those headlines hit my RSS reader. Not a day goes by when I read a news release of one brand name company or the other announcing their digital music service. Continue »

Skype as the Next Generation PBX

Om Malik | Wednesday, August 17, 2005 | 3:00 AM PT | 8 comments

Skype goes beyond the traditional PBX features with its support for IM and ability to share contact information with other applications. These features are exactly the selling points of the newest software based PBX systems. The IM thing especially, as it ties into something called “presence.”

FolderShare, (Like) DotMAC for everyone

Om Malik | Wednesday, August 17, 2005 | 2:00 AM PT | 12 comments

Peer to peer networking is normally associated with illegal music and movie downloads. Napster and Kazaa are largely responsible for that image, as was AudioGalaxy. Now, the creator of Audiogalaxy, Michael Merhej, is going legit and has developed a new application that puts power of P2P to good use - syncing folders and files between various different computers that you own. Merhej, heads up FolderShare, an Austin, Texas-based company that has developed an application of that name. Continue »

Foo(camp)Fighting

Tim O’Reilly has built a publishing empire based on geek love. Now its time for him to face the ire of the very same geeks, who are now organizing a rival camp to Tim’s Foo Camp. “I really love the people who COME to O’Reilly events - but have you ever seen Rael or Tim at anyone else’s conference?,” asks Marc Canter, the Silicon Valley raconteur and a digital provocateur. Good point, Marc. Continue »

Mysore, one of the most beautiful cities in India, has become one of the first cities in India to offer commercial WiFi access, thanks to a company called WiFiyNet. “Don’t let the oldworld charm of Mysore fool you. It has raced past hi-tech Bangalore, by going completely wireless (Wi-Fi), an achievement still beyond Bangalore,” says Times of India Continue »
