Philadelphia is inching towards realizing its WiFi dream, a dream that is shared by other cities like San Francisco. Today the word has come that Hewlett Packard and Earthlink are two companies that have been shortlisted for building out a Philadelphia-wide WiFi network, beating out groups that include AT&T-led consortia. That was expected given the incumbent relationships of some of the groups. Still, looking at it dispassionately, the deal is pretty much in the bag for Earthlink. I think Philadelphia is going to use HP as a leverage to gain more concessions from Earthlink. This is much needed good news for Earthlink, which has been one of the main victims of the Brand-X decision and lately the FCC decision to un-sharing DSL lines. The city of Philadelphia will announce the eventual winner in 30 days. Muniwireless points out that in the end the big winner is going to be Tropos Networks, which provides metro wifi gear to both the companies. Continue »
Last evening I caught up with Jason Fried, one fifth of the quintet known as 37 Signals. He had just settled into his new home in Chicago, and well was hoping to feast on some middle eastern goodies when I rudely interrupted his dinner. Jason, being a gentleman spent a lot of time with me, and at some point during the conversation, we talked about the recent buzz in Silicon Valley. I asked him, if he would ever move here. And well, his answer took me back to my story, Escape From Silicon Valley. Jason and his virtual bandmates are spread all over the country/world, and make a comfortable living from their efforts such as Ta-Da List and Basecamp. 37 Signals should have part of my story, but somehow I missed them. Zotob virus, which affected folks over at CNN is taking its toll on broadband service providers, according to Radialpoint, a Montreal-based security company. The broadband providers are seeing a sharp increased in the “support call volume compared to other recent virus outbreaks.” These could be classified as panic calls, more than anything. Eight or nine variants of the virus have been identified in the last 72 hours. The virus however has not caused much damage, other than generate more bad PR for Microsoft, because it affects Windows 2000 machines more than any other variants of Windows.
