What is WiMax Reality?

Om Malik, Monday, August 29, 2005 at 11:05 PM PT Comments (7)

The number of (WiMax) trials has ballooned to more than 100, up from 50 just months ago, reports AP. That to me is the clear problem - trials, not deployments. Its like I have heard the same executives say exactly the same thing for so long, that I worry if we are going to stay [...]

iPhone that cried wolf

Om Malik, Monday, August 29, 2005 at 10:57 PM PT Comments (12)

The story of iPhone, the much rumored, and eagerly awaited iTunes phone from Motorola and Apple, reminds me of the childhood story about a boy who cried wolf. Once again the rumors have flared up about the pending launch of the device, probably on September 7, 2005, at a special event Apple is hosting for [...]

How real is Verizon’s EVDO price cut?

Om Malik, Monday, August 29, 2005 at 6:02 PM PT Comments (3)

Like everyone else, I rejoiced at the price cuts introduced by Verizon’s new EVDO service. I missed reading the fine print, but Mike did not. “If you want the $60/price you have to be a Verizon Wireless voice customer as well. Otherwise it’s back at the $80 price point,” he writes. Yikes!

Skype turns two

Om Malik, Monday, August 29, 2005 at 12:06 PM PT Comments (1)

Can you believe that Skype is already celebrating its second birthday (today) and dreaming of good old days when it was growing faster than weeds after monsoon rains. Oh where have those days gone, and where are those mega-billion buyout offers. Still, happy birthday guys!

Scoble is wrong about thin clients

Om Malik, Monday, August 29, 2005 at 12:00 PM PT Comments (13)

When you cannot comprehend the revolution, you try to poo-pooh it. Scoble, having been assimilated by the borg, laments desire for thin client type functionality as a “disease that’s all the rage lately.” He thinks thick clients are coming back. Like Bell Bottoms, Disco Music and Happy Days!
Given that this meme has started to spread, [...]

P2P, the only killer broadband application

Om Malik, Monday, August 29, 2005 at 12:08 AM PT Comments (8)

Napster, the first easy-to-share P2P file sharing network, was all the rage in the late 1990s before the record industry cracked down and drove it into bankruptcy. While the morality of Napster system is still topic of big debate, it role in the proliferation of broadband cannot be denied. Consumer, tired of downloading files switched [...]

Switch Back (to) Panther (from) Tiger

Om Malik, Sunday, August 28, 2005 at 11:32 PM PT Comments (19)

I am an early adopter - be it a new phone, a new music player or a new operating system - I am first in line to snap up that gizmo. It was this lust for new that prompted me to switch to Apple Tiger almost instantly. A clean install, and seamless transition to Tiger [...]

eDonkey, the new king of P2P

Om Malik, Sunday, August 28, 2005 at 6:00 PM PT Comments (2)

If 2004 was the year of BitTorrent, then 2005 is turning out to be a year of eDonkey, according to data collected by Cambridge, UK-based Cachelogic. By the end of 2004, BitTorrent was accounting for as much as 30% of all Internet Traffic, and a December 2004 crackdown by MPAA on major torrent sites such [...]
