[...] It may initially seem that this is a stupid move by the music industry. After all, the iTunes Music Store has done more for monetizing digital music than anything else — why mess with it? Still, that last bit about songs going for less than 99 cents has people excited, myself included. Maybe an iTMS with variable pricing will introduce the record companies to the Long Tail.
Well, All I can say is that I still buy my CD's from the store, then rip them and play them on any one of the 5 mp3 players or 7 computers in the house. Frog em is what I say, I'll keep buying my CD's at the store, ripping them, and playing the MP3's where ever I feel like, the music industry had it's chance....

It has been 5 years since I bought a retail CD, for the very reason of the record exec's endless greed. I know I will never buy another.

So very true. Apple will still sell iPods even if the online music downloads business goes belly up. They'll just be filled with CD-ripped and p2p (for those who don't mind illegal) music. Likely more of the latter than the former if CD prices keep going up.

And if the WMA-protected CD trend expands, maybe that'll even drive people to Macs, where it has no effect at all.

iTunes will survive at 99cents...

OR

P2P will survive at zero cents.

Either way, iPods still sell. And MP3s still work, no matter where iPod owners get them, even jail ;-)

The 'industry' had a very good run, 1982-2000. But, these guys need to shift gears. Which they will, eventually. They are way too fixed in their thinking, and need to learn to operate from the same mindset as 'Carnies'. Ever changing their strategy - to make money however they can.

We need to say no to their current one.

Most folks don't mind paying - even a high price on some items. But in today's world, only the most foolish of us can't see that we're clearly been gouged.

Considering the labels will be dealing with Steve Jobs, I really think your title should have been "Tough Times Ahead for Record Labels." Even if he ultimately concedes to some of their conditions, you got to know he'll make their lives a living hell during the process. Yes, he can be an SOB, but never forget, he's our SOB.

they're alot like washington, wrongheaded stubborn and insensitive.

remember CDs were 11.99 when they 1st came out.
now they cost 17.99. in 2005, they should cost less than 4.00 ...

All these years the record companies have been sticking it to the consumers. They promised the price of CDs would come down after a year or two when first introduced, it never did.
I really hope Apple introduces their own Music Company, obviously not Apple Records, but something that will stick it to those greedy bastard Record Labels.
Go Getum Apple!

Raising prices? For 99 cents you get an inferior product to CDs in so many ways (sound quality, interoperability, liner notes, etc.)... so prices should be less. But regardless, I'm still not buying any DRM crap.
