Based on the recent OECD Report On Digital Music Mike Hales has outline “a number of factors stand in the way of rapid progress” of mobile music.
“In summary, the mobile space is very fluid and it’s very early days but what will happen is that the branded and recognised digital music services will come into the mobile space over the next 12 months forcing operators to work with or go head-to-head with them. What is most likely is that the development of the mobile platform will only serve to increase the digital music space and not simply cannibalise the existing base of fixed line music users. However, the big issues of DRM and interoperability will have to be resolved otherwise the whole thing will go nowhere.”
