First, the VC funds are not flowing as easy as they were 4 years back – so $100m is a big deal. Secondly, Vonage is not going to disappear – but at worse be a target for a buyout in the future. Fianlly, with the problems you talk about, these exist everyone – even the baby bells had their fair share.

According to an 8/25/04 Vonage press release , total investment in Vonage is $208M.
