Purchased the equipment from Office Depot to connect to AT&T VOIP. Brought the stuff home. Called for tech support. Non existant. Found out had to sign a 1 year contract. Found out my phone number not transferrable, but will be someday. Appears computer has to be running to use the service, but couldn't verify -- no tech support available! Checked internet for various services available -- AT&T highest priced and apparently charges extra for features that are standard most other services -- couldn't verify this with a real person, however. Also rated 'bottom of the heap' with a 2 star rating. Signed up with Packet 8 at $10 per month less, and equipmet to hook-up is less than $10!

Returning all the stuff back to Office Depot tomorrow for a refund, boxes unopened.

I foolishly thought that AT&T may have actually gotten its act together. If they had tech support, they would have had 53,001 users.

CallVantage: Only 53,000 Customers

AT&T has been reluctant to share their customer numbers and I assumed that was because they were low. It turns out that 53k is the number of users they have while Vonage is going to break 500,000 by the summer....

Aswath thanks for the IOBI reminder. it seems we got so obsessed with the new technology that we forget that even dinosaurs took a million years to mutate and becoming birds or a lizard or something else. you can count on the craftiness and survival skills of Bells. God sake they have been around so long. I think cable guys will take their own sweet time rolling out their *features* for as you had reminded me at VoN - how much cable guys want to be like the phone guys

I am not comfortable in predicting what the incumbents will do, but they have a few other options that is generally not discussed in VoIP blogosphere. There is a general consensus that VoIP will be "more about features than just lower price". Verizon has demonstrated with their iobi service that many of the VoIP features can be replicated in PSTN. So instead of deploying VoIP, they could more widely deploy iobi like service. Also currently cable telephony does not offer some of the features that iobi can deliver (even though there are technical difficulty).
