SBC, AT&T Merge?

Om Malik sums up nicely the talks between SBC and AT&T which were reported also by the Wall Street Journal and New York Times this AM. With the purchase of AT&T, SBC would have a better entry into the business…

SBC, AT

Pointer to Om Malik on Broadband which has been covering this story quite closely.

COMMENT:
AUTHOR: Charlie Sierra

BellSouth will never allow SBC to do this deal without a fight.

ATT CEO is an Atlanta guy, and Atlanta is home to more of the Fortune 500, than anybody except NYC and the energy firms in Houston.

Together SBC+BLS are the equal of Verizon, but there is no taste on BLS’s part to become an even more junior player.

I give kudos to SBC for some balls, or whoever leaked this story, and it is indeed a smart buy, but the current dynamics say this is the wrong time.

I think the market would favor a BLS-T deal instead.

COMMENT:
AUTHOR: Om Malik

Charlie i agree with you, I think BLS could make a bold move, jump in, and also scoop up qwest. i think at that point it becomes more of an equal partner for SBC. bit i guess it is not going to happen like that. i think i had predicted this three way last year, but SBC is the one surprising everyone.
