Hope all is well.
I am looking for the same thing as you do. I want a VoIP Indian Number in India that if I will visit USA, UK or anywhere in the world, I can take the device with me and can hook up in any broadband and I shall be able to use it as Indian Local Number.
Id you found some information on that, please share it with me on cooltigerinusa@yahoo.com

Hey,

I sent a Vonage package to my parents in Mumbai. They've been using it with Iqara. However Iqara's connectivity and service is so terrible that we are considering moving to Tata Indicom.

Will we have problems using Vonage with Tata Indicom? (I believe Tata Indicom = VSNL). I ask this coz I've been hearing that the government has denounced Voage, although I'm not sure if it is illegal.

It would be great if you could answer this question!

It is a peety that Indian Government does not take bold steps to free the VOIP applications without any strings attached. the whole world is using it creatively for various different needs. Indians are very innovative and would develope wonder VOIP products. Surely IT Industries are using VOIP, but some local guy if he uses some VOIP setup, he gets busted for the RACKET.

Where do we draw a line about what is legal and what is illegal? Yahoo Messenger with Voice or say Skype and the Skype with USB IP phone. If the voice is sent as data on the internet till India, Government should worry about local revenues and not ask for International call termination rates.

VOIP and OM are synonymous. Hope Om Malik you could take this matter with Indian Government since you are master in the VOIP feild.

I have vonage which lets me have upto 2 alternate phone numbers in different area codes. My question is…. is there a VOip company in India that will allow me to have a local Indian phone number that gets routed to my real number in the US ??

Also Our devices can work with static/dhcp/PPOE network types.
Once you buy Vonage and hook it up to your internet it locks your device and you can’t change the settings to make it work with Static or Dynamic network addresses.

You need to use it to blv it.

Im using Vonage in Delhi, but am unable to get anothing more than a dial tone. My ISP has static IP addressing (which i set in the VoIP Vonage Router) and also has a login application, which Ive enabled thru my Laptop.

Its a Racket on the part of the local Telcos who want to charge different rates for local, long Distance and International calls. The Telco should be in the business of completing the last leg of the call, at the same price, no matter where the call originates. Same stuff happens in the US with the ILECs charging more for intraState calls than for interState calls.

On the subject of VoIP in India, the ‘racket’ part aside, can someone explain if I could just take my ATA box (I’ve had Vonage since July of 03.. Thank you!) with me while visiting and plug it into one of the broadband (Cable modem in India?) lines, will it let me send/receive calls using my home phone# in the US? Just wondering..
