Infectious Greed: So, will Joy be more like Robert Metcalfe — someone high-profile who came into venture capital late and it seemingly suits — or more like Stewart Alsop — someone high-profile who came in late and for whom it was a poor fit? 2. Maybe we should step back and first ask what Mr. Joy’s investment goals really are. Is he looking to focus singlemindedly on finding and funding and nurturing the next Microsoft, Cisco, Sun, Oracle, Amazon, eBay, Google, et al, or merely looking to lend a hand with his technical expertise?

The good venture capitalists will tell you that there is no way for you to predict whether any particular successful person will in fact also succeed as a venture capitalist.

So, why second guess Mr. Joy… let him sink or swim.
