Pretty much gone are the days of building and selling phones separate from services. Because of both the need for risk mitigation (guaranteed volume sales) and technology dependencies -- most phones are purpose built for specific carriers selling to specific customers. I think the Apple thing could be very convicing if someone like T-Mobile sold it to work off it's Wi-Fi service. But that's a different direction than the author rightly suggests. Right now it is all speculative. I have a feeling a GSM service would make sense, because you can buy the phone from Apple, and then simply slide in your GSM SIM card.
