Pda2k_1The first 3G smartphone to run on a Windows Mobile Smartphone was announced today in Australia. The i-mate PDA2K EVDO offers an extensive range of functionality including a convenient built in QWERTY keyboard (accessible by sliding the screen up), Windows Media Player, MSN Messenger, Bluetooth, a built in digital camera/video recorder (with flash), a sharp 64K full color screen, a generous 128MB user memory, and an SDIO slot. The PDA2K can also be used as a modem for those who prefer 1xEV-DO network access via their PC’s.The new i-mate has an integrated camera (0.3MP) and a unique sliding QWERTY keyboard for pounding out novels and emails. An MP3 player Bluetooth round out the very full specification of the phone. Here’s hoping the PDA2K will make it to the US soon. Full information on the i-mate web site.

    I rang and spoke to I-Mate tech support and asked for confirmation of the modem capability. The first answer was, “No modem capability” but I found “wireless modem” on a spec sheet and called back. After a couple of days they confirmed that it should be modem capapble but that the drivers are yet to be written. No timing for availability was offered …..
