Om Malik, Monday, March 29, 2004 at 10:03 AM PT Comments (7)

I had some serious MySQL problems this morning and hence the slow posting and delays. Another SPAM attack which pretty much has killed the server. This one was third in as many weeks. Wonder how long I am going to stay with MT, which is fast becoming the windows of blog universe.

Why wait for Google?

Om Malik, Sunday, March 28, 2004 at 10:03 AM PT Comments (0)

A lot has been written about how Google initial public offering is supposed to revive the moribund fortunes of Silicon Valley. I thought too much was being made of the Google IPO. I checked in with Tom Taulli who is somewhat of a guru on the whole IPO game, and wanted to get his opinion. [...]

Om Malik, Saturday, March 27, 2004 at 8:03 PM PT Comments (1)

Next week I will be at the second Fast Net Futures conference in Santa Clara, California. It is organized by Dave Burstein who publishes e-letter, DSLPrime. I will be speaking at one of the panels on March 31, 2004. Among the things which I am most looking forward to is the demo of 100 megabit [...]

Bursting the Skype Bubble

Om Malik, Saturday, March 27, 2004 at 8:03 PM PT Comments (0)

For past few weeks there has been a lot of noise around Skype. What with company raising millions in venture capital, and all the gushing press, I thought perhaps it was time to take a lot at this more critically. I think it was one of the comments on Skype Hype II that got me [...]

Metro PCS files for IPO

Om Malik, Saturday, March 27, 2004 at 7:03 PM PT Comments (4)

Somehow I missed this one, but looks like small mobile carriers like Virgin, Boost Mobile and MetroPCS are hot enough for an IPO. Last week, MetroPCS Communications of Dallas filed a registration statement with the Securities and Exchange Commission for an initial public offering of common stock. MetroPCS is a provider of wireless communications services [...]

Bring on the noise, Bring of the WiMAX hype

Om Malik, Saturday, March 27, 2004 at 9:03 AM PT Comments (0)

Intel is making a lot of noise about WiMAX, and the press is playing ball. Too many stories and too little context. And too much confusion about this technology which is in a sense a worthy descendant of the fixed wireless technologies of late 20th century. Actually it has inspired a lively debate and I [...]

Convergence 2.0

Om Malik, Saturday, March 27, 2004 at 8:03 AM PT Comments (2)

Christian Lindholm, director of multimedia applications over at Nokia has some interesting thoughts on the whole concept of convergence and the role mobile phones will play in the evolution of a highly digital and mobile lifestyle. Lets call it convergence 2.0. He found evidence of it at the CeBit.
bq. Integrating voice, image, video and text [...]

CeBit 2004, repackaged and remixed

Om Malik, Saturday, March 27, 2004 at 7:03 AM PT Comments (0)

Underground London has a very in depth recap of the recently concluded cellphone love fest, CeBIt 2004. The highlights from the show include a remarkable return of swivel phones.
The site dubs 2004 as the “year of the slide, with many manufacturers taking a lead from the 7650 and the SL55.” (I personally love the new [...]
