Om Malik, Monday, February 23, 2004 at 10:02 AM PT Comments (0)

Now this is really a clever idea in my opinion. For about $35, StarBrite has a software called PPod which turns your Pocket PC device into an IPod. It is a nice MP3 software which has the look and feel of IPod but does not have the coolness of the real thing. Oh well!

How Secure is VoIP?

Given all the hoopla around voice over the internet Protocol, not many have talked about the security risks involved in this technology. Elisabeth Ussher, an analyst with The Meta Group points out that the “current IP telephony products and implementations demonstrate an alarming lack of protective security measures, leaving the enterprise open to privacy [...]

IPod will get you killed

Om Malik, Monday, February 23, 2004 at 10:02 AM PT Comments (0)

Believe it or not, the desperate gangs are resorting to mugging and maiming people over IPods in United Kingdom, according to this report from This Is London.

IPod ends OS wars

Om Malik, Monday, February 23, 2004 at 10:02 AM PT Comments (0)

Not to be too IPOD focused but there seems to be too much buzz around IPOD these days. Apple Matters’ Hadley Stern, writes this wonderful essay on how IPod has brought about an end to the OS wars. “After trying “Switch” as a campaign to sell the Mac on its own merits, Apple is assuming [...]

Well this has got nothing to do with broadband or technology, but increasingly it is obvious that men are an absolutely demographic. They don’t buy $400 dollar shoes, read or support men specific shows etc. In other words, we are all too wrapped up in TiVo, email and the ultimate pursuit of well carnal satisfaction. [...]

Niki Scevak, analyst with Jupiter Media makes light of Eli Noam’s argument that IT and media are going to hell.
bq. The reason why his premise is flawed is that advertising pricing on the Internet is rebounding strongly (paid search is the best example of this). Noam misses the bigger picture. Advertising markets shadow consumer [...]

Nokia’s WiFi/GSM phone

Om Malik, Monday, February 23, 2004 at 6:02 AM PT Comments (1)

MuniWireless is reporting that Nokia has launched its first Wi-Fi enabled GSM communicator phone. “With all those VoIP apps available, you’ll be able to make voice calls without having to pay ridiculous mobile operator fees. Other mobile phone manufacturers such as Motorola and Ericsson will no doubt incorporate Wi-Fi in future products,” Esme writes, and [...]

The Mouse Trap

Om Malik, Saturday, February 21, 2004 at 10:02 AM PT Comments (0)

This week, my Business 2.0 column dealt with the Comcast-Disney merger and why it is a risky strategy for Comcast. It is my firm belief that the Cable companies future is is communications, not content. They have an incredible pipe which can and should be leveraged for all sorts of services - from phone, broadband, [...]
