VoIP reality check

Marguerite Reardon of C/Net News.com has a rather interesting article on VoIP in the enterprise, and provides a much needed dose of reality when it comes to VoIP.

bq. Analysts say it could be years before most companies are willing to throw out their old PBX (private branch exchange) phone systems and run end-to-end Internet telephony. And that could mean a slower road to the IP promised-land that Cisco Systems and other IP supporters have been preaching.

After talking to Avaya for one of my earlier columns in Business 2.0, I had come to the same conclusion.

I would like to look at a simple test involving a 5 meg pipe to my NY office and some VOIP add ons, but everybody wants to go for it all. I am not ready for that. I am a “voice guy” but I sure would like to test and understand on a small point to point basis without involving the entire IT shop.
Thanks
Joe
