In what is perhaps the biggest roll-out of subscription services for a media company, The Guardian has finally launched a bunch of premium services, which includes an ad-free subscription version, subscription newsletters, registration for its MediaGuardian section, and premium crossword.

Emily Bell, the editor of Guardian Unlimited, the online version, explains it in a letter from the editor: “It is not a decision we have taken lightly, as we value our ability to reach and communicate with a broad community of users above all else. However, the reality of running a successful free website is that we have to find new ways to maximise our revenue so that we can continue to support the highest quality journalism.”
