Time Inc’s Online Content Might Be Walled Off on AOL: Call it the “revenge of Pathfinder”. According to this story in WSJ, America Online and sister magazine publisher Time Inc. are discussing an agreement under which a substantial portion of the content on Time Inc.’s currently free websites could be transferred onto AOL’s struggling proprietary service.

“Rather than support fully functional Web sites that bring in little revenue, Time Inc. would probably create pared-down sites for its titles. The sites would give readers snippets of coverage and a chance to subscribe over the Web. News-oriented magazines, such as Time, or sites that like to post breaking news online, such as Sports Illustrated, may have a larger presence on the Web, these people say. Under one scenario, magazine subscribers who aren’t members of America Online could get a password to read the magazine online, executives said.”
