TheStreet.com’s New Unit Part of a Bigger Strategy: WSJ.com analyzes the prospects of TheStreet.com’s new subsidiary Independent Research Group. It remains to be seen whether TheStreet.com can make money from the new unit and whether it will be able to attract top talent, though the latest maneuver follows CEO Tom Clarke’s recent strategy of targeting professional investors. In June, TheStreet.com founded a division focused on providing research and trading products to hedge-fund mangers, brokers, financial planners and traders. Since Clarke’s arrival in October 1999, the company has sought to broaden its customer base through the creation of niche newsletters and Internet-based products.
