Yahoo Launches “Industry Center”, a Possible Precursor to Premium Industry Verticals (via TEoF): A new section of Yahoo Finance called “Industry Center” organizes resources, news, calendars, market info, and additional info by industry. Fee-based research reports are also available. Industry topics include “Internet”, “Media & Advertising”, and “Financial Services”, among others. Business information services company Hoover’s is also providing premium information to these ICs, through an expanded partnership with Yahoo. “Each Industry Center page features a Hoover’s Industry Snapshot, which includes an in-depth profile, information on key people and the top 10 companies within that industry, as well as links to industry glossaries, associations and organizations,” according to a Hoover’s press release.

These kind of industry verticals are perhaps the holy grail for business sites such as WSJ.com, TheStreet.com and CBS MarketWatch, among others. For example, WSJ.com recently launched a health industry edition, and plans to launch more verticals in the near future. Most of these verticals lend themselves to premium subscription services, either on a stand-alone or bundled basis, and this is perhaps what Yahoo aims with the launch of IC.
