(via TEoF): BT is beta testing a micropayments service for U.K that will let users buy online services/products/content and add the bill to the regular phone bill. The service has already been successful in Germany. “BT has signed up about 15 sites for the pilot, beginning this month, including Sportinglife.com and Handbag.com. The software was licensed from Germany’s Firstgate Internet, which has already signed up 1,000 content providers and 600,000 end users.” The German experience suggests most demand will be for payments between 50p and £5, according to an older Guardian story.

For more info on the service, read the detailed press release issued by BT in April.
